City of water - Rijeka Like many other cities is Rijeka city located along the river.  Recina River and its tributaries make Rijeka a special and interesting city. Rijeka is today one of the largest  towns and cities of our beautiful country.Its speciality lays not in the river or its tributaries but in the sources of drinking water. In the vicinity of the city of Rijeka there is a source of drinking water  which was used since the beginning of the 19. Century. Many would say, yes, this is not unusual! Of course, this is not unusual, uncommon is that it is healing water, the water of exceptional quality and clarity. No town in Croatia can boast with such water quality. Locals say that if you drink Rijeka's water once you will surely come again! Whether the statement is true, you decide. As many other towns in Istria also has Rijeka turbulent past. The first inhabitants of the Rijeka come from paleolithic age. Illyrians were at that time located as the first inhabita...nts around the Rijeka and in the area around the river Rječina. With the arrival of the Romans changes came in Istria. One part of the  city of Rijeka  began to approach the sea. Rječina river flows into the sea, and people began to build houses on both riversides. This is where today's old town is located which was able to preserve its monuments in spite of the turbulent past. Historical witnesses are aprecciated buildings. Gate, the remains of the Roman Baths, the Roman walls, are just a few sights of the old times. Considering the ruins of the old Roman baths we can say for sure that the Romans knew the benefits of a water supply and were able to take advantage of it. Position of the Rijeka, their narrow coastal strip and the protection afforded by the Rijeka Bay turned Rijeka into a shopping city. Rijeka became over the years more and more important seaport in the trade and the exchange of goods. Today's  Rijeka is an urban city with all its virtues and one of the biggest virtues is still the healthiest source of drinking water!
