Lovran - Oldest settlement with many visitors Lovran is the oldest settlement mentioned in historical sources on the eastern coast of Istria. It is  mentioned in the seventh century  as Laurian  by the unknown chronicler from Ravenna. It was also mentioned as Mont Laurentus in a poem of the Patriarch Paulinus of Aquileia which sings of the death of count Erich of Strasbourg who was killed in a fight against Croats in 799.somewhere in the vicinity of the present city Lovran. Arabic geographer and cartographer Al Idrisi mentioned Lovran in 1153. as an important sea and commerce city. Lovran was  at that time much more important than the neighboring towns Labin and Plomin, the important from Roman times. Although Lovranians were excellent seamen and traders they could not compete seriously to the steamships and a new star appeared -  Opatija. Fortunately for Lovran and its inhabitants began Opatija to spread and soon became to small for all those seeking a place to b...uild a house, restaurant or hotel. Lovran had good infrastructure and as much green on the slopes of the Ucka Nature Park. To experienced Lovrans it soon became obvious that their future lies in tourism. They accepted foreign investors, and later began to invest themselves. So at the end of the XIX Century Lovran became a part of the tourism of Opatija but with a personal urban look. Mediterranean vegetation, beautiful beaches, numerous villas and hotels make it to one of the most attractive tourist destinations of Opatija Riviera . Twelve kilometers long promenade leads from Lovran to Opatija and further to Volosko, the true paradise on earth for the owners of private accommodation and particularly for tourists which love the fresh air and the pleasant climate and long walks.
