Lovran

Lovran - Oldest settlement with many visitors Lovran is the oldest settlement mentioned in historical sources on the eastern coast of Istria. It is  mentioned in the seventh century  as Laurian  by the unknown chronicler from Ravenna. It was also mentioned as Mont Laurentus in a poem of the Patriarch Paulinus of Aquileia which sings of the death of count Erich of Strasbourg who was killed in a fight against Croats in 799.somewhere in the vicinity of the present city Lovran. Arabic geographer and cartographer Al Idrisi mentioned Lovran in 1153. as an important sea and commerce city. Lovran was  at that time much more important than the neighboring towns Labin and Plomin, the important from Roman times. Although Lovranians were excellent seamen and traders they could not compete seriously to the steamships and a new star appeared -  Opatija.
