Žirje

Žirje island is named after the fruit of the oak tree, acorn, and it is the most remote island in the archipelago of Šibenik . With numerous islands and bays it offers beautiful holiday. Since it was quite far away from the mainland the island served once as a outpost on which in the 6. century an fortress was built. Its remains are located on the Gradina . In the defense of the city Šibenik played this place a very important role. Locals usually work as the sailors or fishermen, although tourism is also of great importance. It has 29 bays of which the most famous are : Muna, Koromašnja, Mikavica, Tratinska i Pečenja. The bay Stupica is dangerous for the sailing, and as soon as there is a little wind sailors must leave the bay. The island has 485 plant species and 253 marine algae.
