Vir is a place on the same-named island, in the north-western part of Dalmatia. According to the population census in 2001. year had Vir 1608 inhabitants. On the island there are three major settlements: Vir, Torovi and Lozice. The highest peak is Barbinjak with 116 meters above sea level. The islands coast is not indented. On the north-east is situated the island of Pag, on the south-west are the islands Sestrunj Rivanj, Molat and Is. In the list of voters in the local elections in 2005. 2778 Voters were already here, and in the parliamentary elections in 2007. this number increased to over 3,300 voters. According to the most recent data from the interior ministry lived in Vir at 31. March 2010. 4480 People. Evident is the steady growth of the number of people on the island. There are many reasons for this growth in the population. Construction of a large number of second homes has helped the economic development of the island , and thus contributed to improved living conditions and... the increasing urbanisation. Vir is administratively most frequently connected with Nin.
Prior to the independence of the Republic of Croatia, was Vir administratively a part of the commune of Zadar and had the status of the local community. On 12.30.1992 . has Vir for the first time in the history become a municipality which includes the entire island of Vir with the resorts Vir, Lozice Školjić and Torovi. There are many buildings of special historical and cultural dimension and importance of this island Vir. There you can learn historical, cultural and other properties of the place. Historically was Vir prior to the construction of the bridge a most undeveloped part of the territory of today's Zadar district. The population was working in agriculture and, to a lesser extent in fishing. Agriculture has been developed in the parts of the the Vir where nature allowed it, the rocky pastures and rocky areas were suitable for livestock, especially sheep. Figs and olive trees are present but in the lower level. Today's economy is mainly based on Virs tourism and service industries. In 2008. There were 67 restaurants (restaurants, taverns, bars ). Tourist offer is enriched by seven campsites. Additional 97 facilities are active in other services. In the same period operated 67 branches of different sizes. Before the construction of the bridge there was almost no tourist activities on Vir.
In the first years after the construction of the bridge chalets begun to arise. Its construction has intensified in the eighties and nineties of the last century. Construction of a number of second homes has made Vir known to the wider audience and thus was the course of the economic development. The tourism is the most prominent industry in Vir. Apart from the fact that in the center of Vir are located about 7,000 chalets on the island were also built many apartments.. In Vir there was 213 Categorized households with a total of 598 beds in 2008.. Yearly utilization was 19.90 %. It is estimated that approximately 50% of the owners of homes regularly rented their homes and that the annual utilization was actually 61.03 % and the number of nights is 605 811.
