Olib

Olib island is located on the border of Dalmatia and the Kvarner region. It belongs to the north dalmatia islands group - or to be more precise, to the Zadar group. It is located between the island of Pag in the east, from which it is disconnected by Pohlipski channel and the Silba Island in the West from which it is by the Olipski channel disconnected. Already in the first years of the new era, the ancient Greek historian Strabon mentioned Olib as the settlement as"Aloip". Original Aloip settlement was located on the hill Gradina. The location and the name of the locality Gradina show that this settlement existed in the time of the Illyrians Liburns. Population of 200 islanders does not lead to conclusion that already in Roman times Olib has been relatively densely populated. Nearly 500 years ago as the Turks attacked the Croatian mainland many of the villagers from near Split fled on Olib.
