Murter is an island in north Dalmatia The island has an area of 17.58 square kilometers. The island of Murteris connected with the mainland by a short bridge in Tisno and has a population of 5100 inhabitants.. When you say "Murter", you say also the names of many islands, where nature definitely gave the best of herself.
The island was inhabited by the Illyrians in prehistoric times. It was first mentioned by the Greek scientist Ptolemy as "Scardon". Historical continuity is continuing at the time of the Roman domination, what are proofing the remains of a Roman settlement Colentum, many ruins of the Roman villas, frescoes and mosaics scattered throughout the country and the sea. Most of the island is covered with ancient olive trees and figs.
Dinko Svetopetric Zavorović, Sibenik historian, wrote in the 1597.that the island is well cultivated thanks to the hard work of its inhabitants and that there is produced excellent wine. In the summer you can enjoy in Murter concerts of cla...ssical and popular music but, above all the impressive local church choir. A major cultural event is traditional boat race which takes place under the name "Latinsko Idro", every year at the end of September on the feast of St. Mihovil, the patron of the place. Murter sea is the largest maritime area between Sibenik and Zadar archipelago. Its area is 210 km ² big and the maximum depth is 94 meters.
On the northeast side of the Murter sea lies the island of Murter. The island is surrounded by Kornati from the north west, south west and south, and at its south-eastern side are located the famous Sibenik islands Žirje, Kakan and Kaprije. In the middle of the south-eastern edge of the Murter sea are located Tetovišnjaci - a group of five islands and a reef. Clearly visible and identifiable Tetovišnjaci is a good landmark for navigation in small but moody Murter sea. Although the area is small, the Murter sea should not be underestimated. It has strong winds and sudden changes in the currents. Sailors must always be carefully in these waters.
