Korčula - Vela Luka

Vela Luka is a small Mediterranean town situated on the western part of the island Korčula in the bay which is 9.2 kilometers long. This is the most developed place on Croatian islands, because the inhabitants are most of the time engaged in activities such as fishing, agriculture, shipbuilding, shipping, and more recently, tourism. It is well connected with Split, Hvar and Lastovo, which can be reached by ferry. It should be noted that the orientation to shipbuilding industry was very important for the education of young people in technical professions. Vela Luka contains the famous archaeological site of Vela Cave, which belongs to the most important archaeological findings throughout Europe. What lies beneath its surface makes it unique, and considering that the people in it lived 20,000 years ago there was found a piece of art, namely a small sculpture of a horse.
