Sumartin is a place located in one of the bays on the southeast side of the island Brač, formerly called port Vrhbraca which was founded by refugees from the Turks back in 1646. on the southeastern tip of the island of Brac . According to the pre-defined land relations on the island, locals were forced to devote to fishing , marine and shipbuilding, and even today here operates a small shipyard . Shipyard in Sumartin is also the oldest shipyard on the Croatian Adriatic. At the spot where once stood the medieval church of St . Martin is today a monastery. Sumartin was named after St. Martin by the famous Father Andrija Kacic Miocic , abbot, poet and chronicle writter of the 18th century in 1747. In the same museum are Venetian Baroque canvas , handmade floor plan of the monastery of Fr A. Dorotić dating back to 1745. and several metal objects. The new parish church of the monastery was built in the 1913. year . Sumartin counts 482 inhabitants , especially because of the port , which a...long with Supetar and Bol creates the door of the island. Tourism is the main economic activity in Sumartin but there are also farming, viticulture , olive growing and fishing.
As Sumartin is youngest and easternmost town on the island of Brac, fishing is specifically developed. There are no big summer crowds at the middle of the season which allows a time for fishing.
Five times a day are riding ferries directly connected with Makarska during the tourist season and there are also tourist yachts so that the visits to decorated monastery museum are giving the impression of a lively tourist place. The crystal clear waters and beautiful beaches are appealing to all visitors. Rich cuisine, beautiful nature and hospitality guarantee an unforgettable holiday. Sumartin is also the youngest coastal town on the island of Brac in community Selca to which it also belongs. In particular it should be noted that the locals in Sumartin and its surroundings speak stokavian Croatian language which is different from other parts of the island where the predominant language is Cakavian.
