Povlja is derived from the Latin adjective Pauli ( Vallis ) or the estate of Paulianus . It is located on the north side of the island Brač, only 10 kilometers from Sumartin away, belongs to the Selca municipalities and according to census in 2001. Povlja had 364 inhabitants. The villagers are in active in agriculture, processing of stones , fish and recently in tourism. In 2003. this place was selected the most beautiful place to Split Dalmatian county. There are many cultural and historical attractions in this small but attractive place. The parish church svetog Ivana Krstitelja has been built in the 5. Century on the ruins of the Basilica. In this basilica was the tomb of the Ivan Povaljski, whose body the Venetians kept as a trophy in the church of San Giovanni Elemosinario. Also known is Benedictine Monastery from the 11. Century. It was destroyed in 1145., and restored in the year 1184 . In the same year Master Radonja has carved an inscription in this church. This is the oldest... known inscription from the carved Croatian verses, famous and well-known Povaljska Listina provides linguistic relic and is kept in the parish house in Pučišće.
It is important to mention that Povljaska listina was written in Bosnian Scripture. Well known are the legends of the Jelena Križarica, mother of Constantine the Great, which was discharged to Constantinople through this place and the legend of Ivan Povaljski , that drove the plague with his words away and walked on the water. Above Povlja are recently discovered interesting natural caves which have big tourist potential. Many bays like Travna, Smokvice , Ticja Luka, Tatinje and Luke surround this little town and the beaches are ideal for a relaxing holiday. Sandy beaches in Povlja offer many sporting activities, such as the renting of a gondola, boats, surfboards, scooters and Ski jets. Football pitches which are located in Povlja, will in any case even satisfy the most fastidious. The accommodation is offered in many private homes and rooms. Numerous bays, cultural attractions and a variety of Dalmatian specialties such as fish and good wine, make this place a paradise for the eye.
