Brač - Povlja

Povlja is derived from the Latin adjective Pauli ( Vallis ) or the estate of Paulianus . It is located on the north side of the island Brač, only 10 kilometers from Sumartin away, belongs to the Selca municipalities and according to census in 2001. Povlja had 364 inhabitants. The villagers are in active in agriculture, processing of stones , fish and recently in tourism. In 2003. this place was selected the most beautiful place to Split Dalmatian county. There are many cultural and historical attractions in this small but attractive place. The parish church svetog Ivana Krstitelja has been built in the 5. Century on the ruins of the Basilica. In this basilica was the tomb of the Ivan Povaljski, whose body the Venetians kept as a trophy in the church of San Giovanni Elemosinario. Also known is Benedictine Monastery from the 11. Century.
