Podgora is a small town situated at the bottom of the mountain Biokovo on which it was named. It is known tourist resort of Makarska Riviera . The place is known for its beauty , beautiful beaches and rich woods that surround it . 1962nd the place was struck by a terrible earthquake that demolished most of the stone houses and the majority of the population had to move closer to the sea , where they built a new houses and then began to engage in tourism , trade and fishing. Until now demolished houses are restored and residents are again coming back. During the tourist season, a place is visited by many tourists. To meet their need Podgora has built a large number of apartments, hotels , restaurants , villas and campsites . Podgora was first mentioned back in 1571. It was a place under the protection of Venice . Frequent attacks of the Turkish army and the pirates from the sea are often referred to in history . After the Turks left, there were built many buildings of historical signifi...cance . Family Mrkušić built its summer residence in the late Baroque style which today represents Classicist chapel of the 1802nd. Parish Church Svih Svetih from 1764., which is located in Gornja Podgora belongs to classicism . Monument dedicated to Mihal Pavlinovic which is located in the cemetery was built by Ivan Rendic which is one of the most deserving individuals of Illyrian movement. The hotel " Prague " was built in 1922 . and at that time began the modern tourism in Podgora although in the early sixties Podgora was still a small fishing village which has developed into a tourist spot after the construction of the highway. Podgora today has about 2000 beds in hotels and about 3,600 beds in private accommodation , and at the cape Sutikla is located same named camp with over 300 seats surrounded by ancient olive trees . Podgora offers numerous sporting activities such as tennis , handball , basketball , bowling and sea activities like skiing , surfing , scuba diving , boating , and also during the tourist season are organized hiking , photo safaris and sport hunting in the nearby nature park of Biokovo .
