Ponikve is located in the municipality of Ston, in the Dubrovnik Neretva County. They are located along the main road of Peljesac, along with parts of Metohija, Boljenovići and Sparagovići which have about 400 inhabitants. The villagers are mostly engaged in agriculture, which emphasizes the olive and grape growing. In recent times, specially developed is tourism and rental apartments. Here live mainly Roman Catholic Croats. Ponikve was inhabited in the Neolithic Age, the remains of which can be found in caves such as Spila na Kopnju, Prinčeve spile na Zabradi and Gudnje na Poraču. Over the years they exchanged many rulers of the Illyrians, the French and the Romans. It should also be noted that green landscape favors the fresh air and peaceful environment that attracts many foreign tourists. The climate is Mediterranean, with warm summers and over 2500 hours of sunshine annually. The villagers grow herbs like rosemary, lavender, mint, sage and coniferous trees such as cypress and ...pine trees which provide good shade in the hot summer months. Visitors can take boat to Korcula, Dubrovnik Metković and, certainly noteworthy to visit the national park of Mljet which is situated on the samenamed island. In Ponikve there is the wind farm built by a German company, and the project was worth 43 million. The construction started in 2011th and was completed a year later in October 2012. Beaches offer a rich tourist offer and various sports activities such as scuba diving, sailing, water skiing and surfing. Tourist can also visit Korčula's beach and enjoy the many events and spectacular games like Moreška and Kumpanji. For a nightlife tourists are visiting nightclubs and discotheques in Peljesac, Korcula and Dubrovnik. Restaurants Honor rich cuisine and Dalmatian specialties, and certainly noteworthy ist Plavac Mali, the most famous wine in this part of the island.
