Koločep

Koločep is the southernmost inhabited Croatian island, which is located 3 kilometers west of the city of Dubrovnik. This island in Elafitis has two names. Locals called it Kalamota, and in the past the island's name was Calamotta. The name of the island is Greek in origin, and the Greek word "Kalamos" in a translation in Croatian language means a fishing rod. Residents call themselves Kalamotezi and fishing rod is kalamuća. It is especially important to note that on this island there are about 17 monuments mainly churches and chapels dating from the 16th century. But the largest church which dates from the 13th century. is dedicated to the Blažena Gospa. The most important chapels are the Chapel of Anton Opat and the chapel of Sv. Ante Padovanskog. In the chapel of Sv. Nikola, which is located in the cemetery were found old frescoes. Today on Koločep ther are no fishermen, although once there was located even the fishing cooperative.
