Stari Grad or how it is called Italian Cittavecchia is a town in in split-dalmatia county. The locals call it stori Grod. They call him also Paiz although this name more apply on the narrow, old town center. Sveti Rok is the patron saint of the town and one church in the old town is dedicated to him. This city lies on the western side of the island of Hvar at the bottom of Starogrojski bay. It has been established as ancient Greek city Pharos in the year 384 BC. The stories say it has been founded by Greek settlers from the island of Paros in the Aegean Sea. According to a few assumptions here was an even older llyric settlement in the area around old town. This city has a very developed culture, as well as a very strong history. Music society was founded in 1876. This was written on a commemorative plaque. It also has a theater and cultural center. The City Library is the successor of "Narodna hrvatska čitaonica starogradjanska", which is located in the palace "Čitovnici". You shou...ld try out the local and authentic cuisine especially Starogruojski paprenjoci. In addition to the many cultural attractions we must mention also the archaeological site near the church of St. Ivan. Old town and its surroundings are rich in the remains from the past. We would like to mention archaeological sites Ciklopske zidine, Faroska hora, Starogradsko Polje, Varbovačko, Vrbanjsko and a part of Dolsko Polje, Maslinovik - Greek tower in the Starogradsko Polje, Glavica and many others. In the Stari Grad on the island of Hvar there are numerous religious monuments: the churches of St. Ivan, St Jerolim with hospice, St Rok, St. Peter with the Dominican monastery church, St Lucija with the remains of the monastery of the dominikanke trećeretkinje (picokare), the St. Nikola, St. Stjepan (parish), Gospojica chapel in the old town, the Chapel of St Jelena on the way from the old town to Dol.
