One of the jewels of the Adriatic coast, Sibenik, is located in the central part of the Croatian coast. It is situated in a picturesque indented bay through which flows one of the most beautiful Croatian rivers, karst river Krka. Sibenik is the administrative and political, economic and socio-cultural center of the Šibensko-Kninski district which stretches along the coast from Zadar to Split Riviera, and its backcountry which is situated at the foot of the Dinara, 45 kilometers away. The district covers an area of 1860 square kilometers islands, coast and backcountry. Islands part comprises of 242 islands, islets and reefs. The islands group is located especially in the north-western part of the archipelago of Sibenik.It features indented coast and low population density. It should be noted that it also includes numerically the largest group of islands Kornati which are known for its bizarre shapes and incredible natural beauty. Through the narrow, winding channel of Šibenik Bay, 10 ...kilometers long and 300-1200 m wide , you can reach the island region and the open sea. The coastal area of Šibenik region extends to the mountain range Trtar located only a few kilometers from the sea, while to the south-east it extends to Svilaja. Most of the population lives in this area of the district.The strong urbanisation began after the Second World War. Almost all production capacities are in the city where almost all of the economic activities and the strength of the district are located.
Limestone mountain ranges, valleys (Gornje i Donje Polje) and plateaux form the basis of the agriculture of the Sibenik and its surroundings. The flora is marked by the richness of the spruce trees in the backcountry and bushes in the coastal regions. Significantly for Šibenik is its Mediterranean climate with hot summers which are not too hot because of its continuous breeze that refreshes and dry winters. The oldest croatian city on the Adriatic coast Šibenik is located in a protected natural harbor in the middle of the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, the old "Mare Adriaticum", at the mouth of the Pearl among the Croatian rivers Krka, at the source of the Croatian culture and history. Šibenik is today with 47,274 inhabitants (2011). capital and culture, education, administrative and economic center of the Šibensko Kninski district. Good traffic is extremely important, because good accessibility determines the quality of the tourist center. Main link is the Adriatic highway with turnings to Drnis (33 km), Knin (55 km) and the inside Croatia. The railway line to Zagreb and Split is inevitable, Split airport in Kaštelas is 45 km away and the airport of Zadar Zemunik is 50 km away. Newly built motorway – Dalmatina contributed significantly to improved links of the Sibenik with other parts of the Croatia and Europe.
In the coastal areas Mediterranean climate prevails in its full sens, but also in continental regions you can feel its great influence. Coastal part has an enviable large number of annual hours of sunshine (2710 hours). The temperatures in summer are relatively high, but the breeze blows from the sea constantly refreshing. Šibeniks winters are mild and most of the precipitation are happening then , while most of the summer remain dry. Bora and southerly winds blow in Sibenik Region, while along the coast blows often mentioned Mistral, a refreshing breeze. In Šibenik were in 2010. 838 Companies registered, three of which belong to the large, 12 were medium, and 823 small businesses. Of the total number were 799 limited liability companies, 16 were joint-stock companies, 14 institutions, eight public companies and a company with foreign company founder. According to the central register were in 2010. 1321 craftsmen logged in. In 2010. 445 associations had their headquarters in the city Šibenik. After the development index ranks Sibenik in group 4 , the development index value between 100% and 125% respectively ( 100.52 % ) of the Croatian average, so it does not belong to the category of assisted areas. In recent years is Šibenik constantly increasing number of guests.
Most of the tourists are looking for accommodation in hotels, in the Solaris hotel resort or in a cities located few kilometers away, Primosten, Vodice Rogoznica or on islands such as Zlarin and Prvić. On the river Krka on August 28, 1895.was built and put into operation hydroelectric power station Jaruga, second power plant in the world and the first in Europe. Šibenik was the first city in the world with electric AC, and it had first public lighting in Croatia. Šibenik is also known as the city of youth and sports. For the athletes forty sports facilities are available in Šibenik, three football fields, a large sports hall in Baldekin for various purposes, more automatic bowling alleys, nine smaller fitness studios, two tennis court complex, two swimming pools (outdoor and indoor), the Rowing Center in Zaton and at Šibenik coast. Šibenik fans call themselves Funcuti.
There are several theories about how Šibenik got his name but none of the interpretations is certainly been accepted. Screenwriter George Šišgorić in one of his works describes the name and location of Šibenik and points out that the city was called Šibenik because it is surrounded with the twigs (šiba). Name Šibenik brings us in connection with the forest by the toponym " "sibin" (Sibinicum), or early Romanesque form of the word "silvona", "silvonae" or "silvone".
