City of Novigrad is located on the northwest coast of the Istrian peninsula, 25 km from the border to Slovenia away.It is located about fifteen kilometers from the nearby centers: Porec , Umag and Buje . The urban area covers an area of 27 square kilometers, from Dajla in in the north to the mouth of the river Mirna in the south. The city officially consists of five places. These are Antenal Bužinija , Dajla , Mareda und Novigrad . According to the last census of 2001. the area of Novigrad has 4002 inhabitants, of which 1,889 are men and 2,113 women. Total number of employees in this time was 1627, of which 871 men and 756 women. The territory of present Novigrad was inhabited in ancient times, as many monuments and archaeological sites are proofing. Novigrad has been mentioned in written documents in 7.century as Neapolis, in the 9 th century as Civitas Nova and in 12 century as Emona, Emonia, Aemonia . Here was the seat of the Diocese of (V / VI century until 1831. ). Novigrad... bishops had jurisdiction over this area of the north up to the river Dragonja and south-east until the river Mirna. Novigrad was due to its location on a small peninsula and its fertile backcountry often been at the crossroads of history. City reached its peak in the 8 to 9. Century as it was the seat of the Frankish princes, and the starting point of feudalism. Because of the frequent wars and infectious diseases the city experienced a stagnation in 16. And 17. century.
Today's three-nave basilica (up to 1831. Cathedral) got their original form in 5. and 6. Century at the time of the creation of the Diocese of Novigrad. Traces of this time are at the northern longitudinal wall , where in 1972 early Christian window frames have been discovered. Within the cathedral complex was baptismal font ( in 1782 demolished. ) and an Episcopal Palace ( episcopium, demolished in 1874. ). The old bell tower was created in 1874. also torn off. Subsequently, a "Campanile" has been built. The church was completely renovated 1408. , 1580, 1746. and in the year 1775. In the Middle Ages, the inner was decorated with frescoes, as their remains on the southern altar show. Today's neo-classical facade has been made in 1935.. Novigrad was a small fishing village in seventies , but it began slowly to develop tourism business . Tourist activities in Novigrad are today the most important economic sector, and many other activities depend on it directly or indirectly . Natural, cultural and historical wealth has helped Novigrad to become a tempting target for tourists from all over Europe and the world. Beauty, traditions, cultural heritage, untouched nature and the sea, near the borders of Europe, the charm of a small town, interesting summer festivals, rich Mediterranean gastronomy, ... are just a few of the benefits of Novigrad tourism.
We should also mention the traditional hospitality of the Region which makes Novigrad even more attractive for tourists . Here, it should be mentioned that in the "Master Plan" of the development of the Istrian tourism, is Novigrad defined as a small, quiet fishermen place for a quiet and romantic holiday. We will close the story of Novigrad as an interesting destination with the fact that a large number of holidaymakers coming to Novigrad and Novigrad surroundings has chosen Novigrad as a kind of second home and bought here an apartment, house or holiday house. That alone explains a lot. City of Novigrad is recognized in the past as a small fishing village. Many people in the sixties worked in the textile industry, or in the nearby quarry. Many of them emigrated to the cities in the vicinity, the centers of the industry. In parallel with this agriculture developed: viticulture and olive-growing in small farms. In the early seventies began an intensive development of tourism. Construction of the hotels and apartments has been an important focal point.Now the population is working to a large extent within the hotels and restaurants.
In the last years of the last century, the economy of the city, as well as the Republic of Croatia itself went through several changes : Entry into the market economy and the transition from public to private ownership. The most important activities in Novigrad today are, hospitality and tourism , textile industry (production) , transportation, construction, agriculture, fisheries and service providers. As tourism is the most common activity it was the objective for all manufacturing companies and industry associations in a working area. The program for the development of entrepreneurship in the city of Novigrad is thus closely linked to the development of the working area Sveti Vidal . In the 60s of the last century, the city transformed for industrial development. In the ' 70s the city quickly turns to the tourism and the large number of citizens began to employ in hotels and restaurants. The tourism industry is today, together with the fishing industry, the textile industry and agriculture, the most important economic sector.
