Zlatar is part of Krapina Zagorje County and consists of 19 settlements. According to the census in 2001. it had 6505 inhabitants. It is mentioned in the distant past, when the family Bedeković in the 13th century, had in possession the property Zlatharia. Once this place was called Zlatarjevo, and there are a few assumptions about the origin of the name. The time from the 10th to the 14th century in this region was of a great insecurity due to the hostile wars, which lead to a construction of thick walls in difficult heights. Some of them even had the churches, such as those from the 1242nd year. Finally in the early 18th century it comes to the development of the plains and the cessation of fear of fighting the enemy lines. In June 25, 1659. it comes to the organisation of fairs and building of new estates and manors. In 19th century it comes to development of Zlatar in terms of political, cultural and economic center of this region and in 1873rd was established the first reading, w...hich had about 70 members. Well known is the parish church, which is located in the center of Zlatar, and which is a true example of sacred space with side chapels. The church has 25 scenes that follow the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary, starting from her birth until the ascension. Zlatar is visited during the summer months by foreign tourists which in particularly are interested in tallest mountain in this county, Ivančica. On the mountain are situated the remains of a fortress dating back to the past. This is an ideal place for recreation and hiking. Well known is spa Sutinske toplice located seven kilometers west of Zlatar, and it has two outdoor swimming pools. It is surrounded by greenery and water has curative significance with the temperature 37 degrees at the source. Spas are open until September and often visited by many foreign tourists. Mountain House Majer is also attractive to the tourists, and contains 20 beds, dining room, kitchen and bathroom, and can be visited on weekends and holidays as it runs from March 1 through October 30th.
