Zagreb is the Croatian capital. Today it represents a big economic, commercial, cultural center, which according to the census of 2011. has about 790,017 inhabitants. Day of the city is celebrating at May 31, when also the feast Majke Božje od Kamenitih vrata takes place. Name of the city is of Croatian origin, but no one can for sure tell what it means. It is located on the southern slopes of Medvednica mountain, at an altitude of 122 meters. It is a rich transport hub between Central and Eastern Europe, and the city is made up of 70 villages. The summer months in this area are very hot and winters are dry and cold. According to data from the written records the city was first mentioned in the 1094th, and it is believed to have originated from two villages, Gradec and Kaptol. In that year, the diocese was founded, and also very important is 1242nd when Zagreb became a free royal city, thanks to the Zlatna bula of King Bela IV. Most of the population are Catholics, almost 87 percent o...f them but there are also Orthodox, Jews, and members of the Islamic faith. City blocks like Trešnjevka, Dubrava and Novi Zagreb are the largest of the city. It is believed that Novi Zagreb was entirely built in the second half of the 20th century, where there are a multitude of residential buildings, surrounded by green areas and wide avenues. Ilica is Zagreb's most famous shopping street, the economy consists of many industries from chemical and pharmaceutical to the textile and metal. One of the busiest ports is Zagreb Airport, which is located near Velika Gorica. Known is also sport Airport Lučko. Gornji Grad, Gradec was founded in the Middle Ages, and throughout history there have been built numerous buildings. Known is the Church of Sv. Marko, which dates from the 14th century. Zagreb Cathedral with its magnificent scenery is considered to be the tallest structure in Croatia, and is frequently visited by many foreign tourists. The Donji Grad became rich urban center of the city, and the largest square of Zagreb is Ban Jelacic Square.
