Vukovar is the largest inland port on Dunav, an important economic center of the Vukovar-Sirmium County. According to the census in 2001., the town had 31,670 inhabitants. During the war this city has suffered great devastation and loss, especially the Eltz castle, which is located in the city. The symbol of the city is Vučedolska dove and Vučedol is perfect for fishermen with a beautiful beach on the Orlov otok. Most residents in the city are Croats, 57.5 percent of them, and Serbs are about 33 percent. Population of the area can be seen thanks to the many archaeological sites. In the Eneolithic period it comes to developing of Baden, Kostolac and Vučedol culture which had other religions and arts of burial of the dead and the different relationships between people. This area is significant for the findings of traces of the Illyrians and the Celts, and it is believed that the Romans also built many fortresses as their predecessors. Over the years it slowly comes to the development ...of the city and in 1867th was established the first printing house. Here was born the famous Nobel laureate Lavoslav Ružička in 1887th. The majority of the population is engaged in commerce, agriculture, textiles and many industries of construction materials, and particularly notable are companies Vupik and Borovo, famous footwear industry. However the industry suffered the most during the war it but has slowly stabilized over the years. In particular, congress tourism began to develop and there is indication that in the 2005th Vukovar visited around 18,500 tourists. Tourists can stay at the hotels Dunav and Lav. The patron of the city is Sv. Filip i Jakov, and famous is Temple of Sv. Nikola, as well as the family mausoleum Paunovic. In Vukovar there are many primary and secondary schools as well as institutions offering higher education such as the Polytechnic school "Lavoslav Ružička" which offers a degree in business administration, law and physiotherapy. It should be noted that here lived many writers like Pavle Pavlicic, Nikola Andric and actors of which the most prominent is Vladimir Puhalo.
