Vinkovci is located in the northeast of Croatia and is part of the Vukovar-Sirmium County. It is situated along the river Bosut, and with its area of 102.805 ha it makes an area rich of ash and oak forests. Vinkovci is known since prehistoric times where Starčevo Neolithic culture particular stands out and certainly noteworthy are Sopot, Vucedol and Vinkovci cultures. Area was inhabited by the Illyrians, and later by Celts. In the past, this city was called Cibalia or Cibalae, and in this area have occurred many conflicts. During the 20th century there was a boom of the town, and in the 1900th this is the city had about 8,500 inhabitants. During the war comes to the destruction of the city and attacks where a large number of people were killed. Given that this area was the center of the Serbian aggression, there was a large emigration of Croats which had to leave their homes and places of birth. At the present time specially developed has been rural tourism since the city offers many ...natural wonders and sporting activities such as fishing and hunting. Celebrity events are Vinkovci Autumns, and first took place in September 1966. Folklore evening also take place, and this event is happening on the main square. Also interesting are the Šokački divani which tend to show the original speech, entertainment and life of Šokci and Slavonians in ancient times. In Vinkovci special highlight is theater in which have acted celebrities like Vanja Drach, Fabian Šovagović, Rade Serbedzija, Ivo Gregurević and many others. Special significance also have writers like Matija Antun Reljković, Josip and Ivan Kozarac. It should be pointed out that here was born Ivan Runjanin and also important are tambura bands like Bosutskih bećara, Sinovi ravnice and Dika. The town has many elementary and high schools that offer numerous courses.
