Slavonski Brod is the second most important city in Slavonia and the sixth largest in Croatia. It is located in Brod Posavina County, and consists of three settlements. And these are Slavonski Brod, Brodski Varoš i Podvinje. According to the census in 2001. Slavonski Brod had 63 268 inhabitants. It is located on the left bank of the Sava River and is the center of the community, and the center of transportation. It is considered the most beautiful city in Croatia, according to Croatian center of tourism in the year 2009. Historically, the city was called Marsonija, and from the 13th to the 20th century it was named Brod na Savi. During the war it was severely damaged, and it should be noted that a large number of displaced persons from Bosnian Posavina moved here after the war. It is believed that there were settlements in the area since prehistoric times. And at the locality Galovo were found the remains of starčevička culture from the Stone Age. This evidences that Brod was inhabi...ted 8000 years ago. Here has been found the shelter for the funeral which is fenced and contains 20 stone axes. Particularly noteworthy are the skeletal remains found, one of which was buried without a head, and another lacked the facial bones as many scientists believe that there were sects in these areas, which have performed the sacrificial rites. During the Second World War it comes to heavy losses in the city, and similar fate the city experienced during the Homeland War, when the Serbs destroyed it. It is believed that Slavonski Brod was after Vukovar second most affected city in the war. Today is specially developed industry, agriculture and fruit growing, and significant is the development of viticulture Zdjelarević. It is important to note that to many tourists who come to this city particularly interesting is square of Ivana Brlic Mažuranić which is also the largest city square in Croatia.
