Pleternica is located in the southeast of Požeško Slavonska County, and consists of 38 surrounding villages. According to the census of 2011., there were around 11,323 inhabitants. In the distant past in the 1857th year Pleternica had 911 villagers, and today the majority of citizens are Croats (97.14%). This the city is since ancient times inhabited by humans, and known is its Paleolithic site in which have been found the remains of bison, deer, horses and other animals. Throughout the history Pleternica changed owners many times, especially during the Habsburg rule. It is believed that in the 1920th the name of this city was mentioned for the first time. During the reign of Maria Theresa in 1770th was opened the first public school, while in the 1894th was opened the first railway line and stations in this area. During the First World War in Pleternica were no major conflicts, but many prisoners and refugees came to the city. In 1952nd Pleternica gets school, which was damaged duri...ng the war. It gets status of the city in 1997th, and in 2010. former Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor, opens a new sports hall. The inhabitants are mostly engaged in industry and trade, and in recent years viticulture has been also significant. There is hydroelectric power plant on the river Orljava which was opened in the 2012th. It is worth mentioning that the Day of the city is December 6, on the same day takes place the Feast of Sv. Nikola, and particularly important event is celebrating of Gospa od suza, which started in the 1955th. It lasts nine days, beginning on August 23, and it is among the population called devetnica. It is believed that reading in Pleternica which was founded in 1907., contains about 30,000 records and books. It began the restoration of many areas and the construction of a new building that will expand the old library. City Pleternica has excellent transport links with other cities and towns.
