Lepoglava is a city in Croatia, located in Varazdin County, and consists of 16 villages. According to the census in 2001. Lepoglava had 8,718 inhabitants. The name of the city was first mentioned in 1399., and the 1400th count Herman of Celje founded the monastery of Sv. Pavle, and it referred to the medieval city on the hill where today stands the church of Sv. Ivan. In Lepoglava have been defended 75 doctoral dissertations (as explored to date) and the Lepoglava rightfully acquired the status of the first Croatian university. Work of Lepoglava Paulines was varied and rich: they are the creators of Croatian books, trainers, consultants, sculptors, artists, promoters of art and culture and they left an indelible mark on the life in Croatia. Above all they shared the fate of the Croatian people - they were great patriots. Among the many friars, many of them deserve to be mentioned and remembered. These are: Hilarion Gašparoti, Nikola Ranger, Ivan Krištalovec, Andrija Egger and others.... However, the most important is certainly Ivan Belostenec author of Gazophylacium - Thesaurus of lexical treasures. Ivan Ranger, Baroque painter who painted the chapel of Sv Ivan in Gorica and Sv. Jurja in Lepoglavska Purga, Kamenica, Višnjica and central monastery and parish church in Lepoglava, so the church in Lepoglava is a specific gallery of Ranger's creativity.Ivan Belostenec and Ivan Ranger are the Paulines of Baroque spirit and expression - in word and visual expression. Exceptional activity of Paulist was interrupted in 1786th by abolishing the Paulist order by decree of Josip II. All the cultural and scientific work vanishes, and Paulines were banished from Lepoglava. In 1854th Monastery of Sv. Pavla was converted into a prison, and during the 20th century in it were imprisoned many celebrities like Josip Broz Tito, Moša Pijade, Alojz Stepinac, Franjo Tuđman and others .Penitentiary in Lepoglava is even today one of the most famous prisons in the state. In 2001. the Pauline complex was separated from the penitentiary and committed to Varaždin diocese.
