Koprivnica is located in Koprivnica Križevci County and is also the center of the county. The city encompasses nine villages and according to the last census it had a population of 30,994 inhabitants. Koprivnica is named after a river Koprivnica, which is mentioned in charters of Croatian-Hungarian King Andrija II Arpadović from the 1207th, 1209th and 1217th year. The settlement was first mentioned in 1272. in deed of donation of the ten-years old Prince Ladislav IV. Kumanac to the castelman and knight of Koprivnica Fort - Bakaler. In 1292. Franciscans arrive in Koprivnica at the invitation of Ban Henrik Gisingovac and raise the monastery and parish church of the Blažena djevica Marija. The coat of arms of Koprivnica is the coat of a free royal city of Koprivnica. On a semicircular shield blue (blue) there is white (silver) tower with no doors embattled and columns of hewn stone. Above the tower is yellow (gold) Royal (Plantagenet) crown, and left and right are double yellow (gold) lilies which are also markeing the royal house of Anjou, who awarded Koprivnica the status of a free royal city. The City Council of the City of Koprivnica in the third session which was held on 07.29.1993. adopted a decision of designating November 4 as the Day of the City of Koprivnica. Although the first mention of the town of Koprivnica dates back to 1272., Koprivnica gets the utmost importance in the 14th century when it on 4 November 1356. in charter of Croatian-Hungarian king Ludovik I Ažuvinac was proclaimed a free royal city. That privilege, among other things, gives Koprivnica the privilege of the square, the city fair every Mondays, the right to choose the pastor and city judge (mayor), who had the right of the sword (death penalty), which is symbolized by hand with a sword at the old city hall .
