Ivanec

Ivanec is a city located in Varazdin County, and consists of 29 villages. According to the census in 2001., the town had 14,434 inhabitants. Ivanec area was recorded on all archaeological maps of the world as one of the first residence of the human species. In the Vindija cave, the Big (Mačkova) cave in Ravna Gora and Severovo quarry near Vuglovec have been preserved the oldest prehistoric periods of mankind. Surroundings of Ivanac are rich deposits of various objects from prehistory. Historians have confirmed that Ivanec was the headquarters of the Order of Sv. Ivan Jeruzalemski, the medieval Roman Catholic order of knights often called Ivanovci after which the town was named. After Ivanovci it belonged to the noble family Petheö de Gerse.
